Great Smoky Mountains Fly Fishing Report - 10/10/18
For many years, during the first part of October,  I made offshore fishing trips for tuna,
dolpin, wahoo, and marilin in the northern Gulf of Mexico. White marlin fishing is always
great at that time. The water was always very warm near the continental shelf, usually
around the mid to high eighties. There were alway good, strong, rip lines with lots of
bait for the big game species. When I first noticed that tropical storm Michael, was
coming into the Gulf, I knew that would be a bad situation because of the warm water.

Yesterday, when I started writing this report, I typed in that I felt like the storm, which
had gone to a cat 3, was sure to go as high as a cat 4. Since the weather experts were
not predicting a cat 4, I felt like it indicated that I thought I knew more than them, so I
erased the cat 4 prediction. The storm is now a cat 4 and will be a strong cat 4.

Whereas, most of the storms turn out to be less damaging than predicted (which is a
good thing), I feel strongly that MIchael is going to be worse than most folks are
thinking it will be. it appears the center will be near Panama City, but a little east of
Panama City Beach. If that turns out to be the case, it will make a few billion dollars
difference in the damages incurred. All the high rise condos and related businesses
are on the beach. Panama City is an older town with Tyndall Air Force Base east of it.
Apalachicola, and other smaller towns along the coast east of there, are all on the right
side of the storm where most damage occurs, and are much less populated. It is all
relatively low, flat land that will incur a lot of flooding and damage. There will be a lot of
boats for sale but not many of them will float. All the inlets have more boats than
people. This is all based on the storm's eye coming onshore near Panama City,
Florida. If it lands west of there, it will be a completely different story.

Sorry, to be writing so much about Michael, but the storm is very much on my mind
having spent much of my grown life living where it is headed, with many friends as well
as Perfect Fly customers involved. I just wish everyone the best.

Recommended Fishing Strategy:
Keep in mind, the strategies I am recommending is for the maximum odds of catching
numbers of fish. Many prefer or favor a dry fly and by all means there isn't anything
wrong with that. It's just a fact that if nothing is hatching at the time, it reduces your
odds of success. You can still probably hook some trout, just not as many as if you fish
subsurface. Of course, this is also based on using good techniques and the right flies.
Some guys don't know how to fish below the surface.

Strategy:
Not all of the insects you see above will be hatching in the same location. It is usually
only one or two. It varies with the elevation. Some are just starting in the low elevations
and some about finished in the higher elevations. If you fished the day or two before
and know where something is hatching, fish the nymph or larva stage of it. If you
haven't fished the day or two before, until I spotted something hatching, I would fish the
BWO nymph. If you spot something hatching (coming off the water), change to the
appropriate emerger, dun or adult imitations of the insect.

Tips for Beginners:
Don't let anyone intimidate you by contending that fly fishing is more difficult to learn
and master than other types of fishing. It isn't.
