Great Smoky Mountains Fly Fishing Report - 09/11/18
The Tennessee, side of the park received some more rain the past 24 hours. Little
River is up to the point wading starts to be tough, but is falling back down fast. All the
other streams in the park are in good shape.

For the past couple of days, up until yesterday, I have been writing about the effects
that tropical storm Florence could have on the Smokies. It is now a category 4
hurricane that may make landfall as a cat 5. At first, it was shown to hit the coast from
Georgia to Virginia, but the following day they move the predictions further north. I
knew if it made landfall in upper Georgia, or South Carolina, the likely path of the
heavy rain that followed would be in the Smokies. After they moved the landing further
north, I knew if would not likely affect the Smokies. The weather guys didn't forecast
heavy rain in their long range forecast for the Smokies, and still are not doing so.
Yesterday, I didn't mention it because they had moved the likely landfall further north
into the middle of the North Carolina, coast. That would mean the heavy rain would go
north of the Smokies. Last night, that changed and it is now forecast to hit the coast in
the same place but stall, move south along the coast some, and then go inland again
much further south. If that happens, the Smokies are in the target zone of heavy rain
again; however, they are still not forecast that. It is a James Marsh worthless guess, but
this "ain't" this old man's first hurricane. I lived in Florida for over 30 years. I predict the
worst and hope for the best. I went through a cat 3, at home, by  myself to promise the
Lord I would never do that again. I still think we could get some heavy rain late
Saturday, or Sunday, from Florence. For sure, inland lowlands in South Carolina, North
Carolina, and Virginia will get dangerous flooding. You better get out of Dodge before
the gun fight starts.

Recommended Fishing Strategy:
Keep in mind, the strategies I am recommending is for the maximum odds
of catching numbers of fish. Many prefer or favor a dry fly and by all means there isn't
anything wrong with that. It's just a fact that if nothing is hatching at the time, it reduces
your odds of success. You can still probably hook some trout, just not as many as if
you fish subsurface. Of course, this is also based on using good techniques and the
right flies. Some guys don't know how to fish below the surface.

Strategy:
Not all of the insects you see above will be hatching in the same location. It is usually
only one or two. It varies with the elevation. Some are just starting in the low elevations
and some about finished in the higher elevations. If you fished the day or two before
and know where something is hatching, fish the nymph or larva stage of it. If you
haven't fished the day or two before, until I spotted something hatching, I would fish the
BWO nymph. If you spot something hatching (coming off the water), change to the
appropriate emerger, dun or adult imitations of the insect.

Tips for Beginners:
Don't let anyone intimidate you by contending that fly fishing is more difficult to learn
and master than other types of fishing. It isn't.
