Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 04/13/15
Yikes, I opened up the weather forecast from the NWS link below and saw rain
covering the next seven day of the graphic. That is bad news. That means my grass
will grow faster than I can cut it. Actually, according to the Doctor, I can't cut any of it
or do much of anything for the next few days. I will get it done otherwise, of course. I
really should do that anyway due to the lack of time I have for it, but I actually enjoy
cutting grass and working in the yard.
Oh, I forgot to mention. I don't think the rain in the forecast is a big deal for the trout,
or at least I hope it isn't. Fish love water. Fish live in water. Fish cannot live without
water. If you don't believe me, ask the state of North Carolina.
While your asking them, ask them why they are stupid enough to leave water values
exposed to the public. Have they heard of fences with gates, and things like
padlocks? They must have trained with the government heads of the border patrol.
There will always be a bunch of jerks needing jail time, but why spend money keeping
guys in jail, and why spend money regrowing thousands of trout that could be
stocked when there are other common sense, simple solutions.
The best solution for the North Carolina situation would be to write some responsible
parties managing the hatchery a final paycheck and get some people with some
common sense to replace them. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe that was close enough for
Oh, another better idea. Get rid of all the government pay checks involved and hire
some private companies to raise and stock the trout. I'll bet a hundred bucks to a
nickel they won't be stupid enough to leave their business exposed to any jerk
looking for something to mess with.

Recommended Fishing Strategy:
Keep in mind, the strategies I am recommending is for the maximum odds
of catching numbers of fish. Many prefer or favor a dry fly and by all means there
isn't anything wrong with that. It's just a fact that if nothing is hatching at the time, it
reduces your odds of success. You can still probably hook some trout, just not as
many as if you fish subsurface. Of course, this is also based on using good
techniques and the right flies. Some guys don't know how to fish below the surface.
Until I spotted something hatching, I would fish a size 18 Blue Quill Nymph. They are
little crawler nymphs that are easily caught and eaten by trout and are currently
hatching. If you happen to know where Quill Gordons are currently hatching, you
should start out in the morning fishing a Quill Gordon nymph.
If you spot something hatching (coming off the water) that is relatively small, it will
most likely be Blue Quills, Blue-winged Olives,or Little Black Caddis. It it is relatively
large, it will be a Quill Gordon. Change to the appropriate emerger, dun or adult
imitations of the insect. If you see Blue Quills, BWOs, or Quill Gordons hatching,
there will be a spinner fall late in the day. Often, you can catch more trout fishing the
spinner fall quicker than you can during the hatch. Change to the spinner imitation of
