Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 01/16/17
The weather forecast is showing highs of about 60 degrees at Gatlinburg, for the
next seven days in a row. Weather experts are saying a pattern change across the
Pacific is going to send much warmer conditions across the eastern half of the nation
over the next 10-days, with stormy conditions, especially across the southern half of
the nation.

They are saying and I quote "temperatures will be over 30 degrees above normal at
times from the Midwest eastward, with the strongest anomalies likely in 7-12 days,
coinciding with the climatological ‘peak’ of winter cold. They are predicting
temperatures will be falling to much below normal again across the western half of
the nation as the major trough developing near the West coast next week sends
height-lowering short waves eastward with colder air following in their wake". In
simple terms, that means it will change to being colder than normal weather.

That is only one prediction, but I've looked at five or six more predictions that all say
almost the same thing. This is very strange weather that I cannot remember
happening, and neither can any of the older weather experts.

I know the bottom of this page is beginning to look like a catalog, but I keep hearing
"I didn't know Perfect Fly sold such and such". Our plans are, by the end of this year,
to not only be selling everything needed for any type of fly fishing, but selling our
own Perfect Fly brand of everything except anything you can eat or drink. We will
leave the floatants and similar products up to others.
We are not Amazon, but we
will be adding some more people and making some more products here in the U.S..

Recommended Fishing Strategy:
Keep in mind, the strategies I am recommending is for the maximum odds
of catching numbers of fish. Many prefer or favor a dry fly and by all means there
isn't anything wrong with that. It's just a fact that if nothing is hatching at the time, it
reduces your odds of success. You can still probably hook some trout, just not as
many as if you fish subsurface. Of course, this is also based on using good
techniques and the right flies. Some guys don't know how to fish below the surface.

Strategy:
Not all of the insects you see above will be hatching in the same location. It is usually
only two or three. It varies with the elevation. Some are just starting in the low
elevations and some about finished in the higher elevations. If you fished the day or
two before and know where something is hatching, fish the nymph or larva stage of
it. If you haven't fished the day or two before, until I spotted something hatching, I
would fish the BWO nymph. If you spot something hatching (coming off the water),
change to the appropriate emerger, dun or adult imitations of the insect.

Tips for Beginners:
Don't let anyone intimidate you by contending that fly fishing is more difficult to learn
and
master than other types of fishing. It isn't.
