Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 12/29/16
I heard some very heavy rain and thunder last night and expected the streams on
the Tennessee side of the park to be very high, but that's not the case, or not yet
anyway. It is only 5:40 AM and they will probably continue to rise. Since today is
Thursday, and another holiday weekend, I am posting the weather report through
the weekend. Angie commented that the roads in Pigeon Forge yesterday,
afternoon, were bumper to bumper. There are a lot of people in town. I'm glad to see
that as everyone is worried that the recent fires is going to affect the number of
tourist.

Yesterday, should have been a very good day to fish but so far, I haven't heard from
anyone that fished. I'm sure we will today. It is going to be a little chilly and windy this
morning. The high Friday will only be 38, and with the wind expected, it isn't looking
like a great day for the average angler. It will be a little warmer Saturday, and so far,
looking like a decent day to fish the streams of the park. I wouldn't be in any hurry to
get on the water. Friday night's low will be about 22.

Weather: (At Gatlinburg at about 1600 ft)
Today, will be cloudy then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 47. It
will be breezy with a west wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Tonight,
will be a slight chance of rain before 10pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow
between 10pm and 11pm, then a slight chance of snow after 11pm. It will be mostly
cloudy with a low around 28. The chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday, there's a chance of snow showers before noon, then a chance of rain
showers between noon and 1pm. It will be Partly sunny with a high near 38. West
wind will range from 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of
precipitation is 30%. Friday night's low will be about 22.

Saturday, there's a 20 percent chance of rain after 1pm. It will be partly sunny with a
high near 46. Saturday night, rain is likely. The low will be around 38. The low will be
around 38.

Recommended Fishing Strategy:
Keep in mind, the strategies I am recommending is for the maximum odds
of catching numbers of fish. Many prefer or favor a dry fly and by all means there
isn't anything wrong with that. It's just a fact that if nothing is hatching at the time, it
reduces your odds of success. You can still probably hook some trout, just not as
many as if you fish subsurface. Of course, this is also based on using good
techniques and the right flies. Some guys don't know how to fish below the surface.

Strategy:
Not all of the insects you see above will be hatching in the same location. It is usually
only two or three. It varies with the elevation. Some are just starting in the low
elevations and some about finished in the higher elevations. If you fished the day or
two before and know where something is hatching, fish the nymph or larva stage of
it. If you haven't fished the day or two before, until I spotted something hatching, I
would fish the BWO nymph. If you spot something hatching (coming off the water),
change to the appropriate emerger, dun or adult imitations of the insect.

Tips for Beginners:
Don't let anyone intimidate you by contending
that fly fishing is more difficult to learn and
master than other types of fishing. It isn't.
