Fly Fishing Strategies - Which Fly To Use - The Coming Week
For the last couple of weeks, it seemed like the fly fishing activity really slowed down in the
Smokies. We received some fly orders for the Smokies and a few email request for which flies to
use but all in all, most of our calls and email was regarding either salmon and steelhead streams or
west coast trout streams. For some reason, that seemed to suddenly change yesterday. It was
probably just a matter of coincidence, but the 800 line started ringing off the hook, several email
request regarding places to fish and flies to use came in yesterday and last night, and so did the
online orders. It seems like someone turned on the master Smoky Mountain fly fishing
Yesterday, I talked to three different customers coming to the Smokies to fish this week from
destinations far away. The rain had just started to come down. That's certainly a good thing but at
the same time, it instantly started me to thinking exactly the opposite of what has been my thought
pattern for several weeks now. I began to wonder if the rainfall amounts would blow the streams out
and ruin some of those visiting angler's trips.
This morning, with a much clearer mind, I begin to think about just how ridiculous it is to want rain
and then when you get what you wish for, start worrying about there being too much of it. I quickly
came to the conclusion that it's a very good thing that we have absolutely no control
Imagine what it would be like if we could control the rain. The first thing that would happen is that
power would be taken away from us common individual stupid people and placed into the hands of
the brilliant Harvard type politicians. The second thing that would happen is there would be several
different forms of taxes placed on rain putting it out of the reach of many of us and the third thing
that would happen is the same thing that happens in congress with everything else - nothing.
Thank you Lord for continuing to handle the rain as you see fit.
As of 6:00 AM this morning, most of the park has already received over an inch of rain. It is
expected to be between 2 and 3 inches. There could be more. Rather than provide a strategy
today, based on unknown conditions in terms of the continuing rain, I will wait until tomorrow. I
doubt there will be a lot of fishing taking place today.
The chances of rain today are 100 percent. Showers should continue into tonight. It should
become partially cloudy by midnight tonight. The chances of rain on Wednesday is 60 percent.
Thursday should be sunny with a high near 76. The high should reach 80 Friday and 75 on
Saturday. There will be a slight chance of showers on Saturday. Monday will be sunny with a high
near a cool 71.
